This group supports the immigration priorities of the state League. We stand opposed to the deportation of non-criminal migrants, against attempts from Tallahassee to interfere with local communities’ Home Rule rights, and against legislation that would force local law enforcement to cooperate with federal officials in the deportation process. We must both ensure the public is informed about the continuing efforts in Tallahassee to interfere with local communities’ rights to govern themselves as well as actively advocate against those efforts.
LWVHC member opportunities:
- Participate in discourse promoting rights of immigrants in Hillsborough County and the state.
- Organize events to collaborate with action groups and media organizations to promote voter registration for naturalized immigrants.
- Lead or assist in advocacy efforts.
- Write articles for the local League newsletter, The VOTER.
- Attend and speak at meetings and public events.
- Meet with, call, email, or write to legislators on behalf of LWVHC issues.
We plan to continue the work of previous years and address current issues of interest to group members. We will continue developing alliances with partners and providing information to League members on opportunities for involvement at the local, regional, and statewide levels.
Duing 2021-22, we have allied with partners including the ACLU of Florida and Immigrant Action Alliance to demonstrate opposition to and awareness of abuses at the Glades Detention Center, engaged in virtual meetings with regional partners including Floridians for Immigrants’ Justice, attended KYR (Know Your Rights) training for Immigrants’ Rights, & engaged in discussions with ACLU Florida on navigating the immigrant student experience for undocumented and DACAmented students.
