Gun violence prevention is a public health issue that affects every Floridian.  In 2019, Florida saw close to 3000 gun deaths, 187 of which were children or teens.  The annual cost of firearm violence in our state is approximately $14.1 billion.

The Gun Violence Prevention Action Team seeks to lower those numbers dramatically.   We advocate for common sense legislation such as expanded background checks and a ban on semiautomatic assault weapons and other large capacity feeding devices.  We also support elected officials who fully understand that this issue is a true public health crisis and needs to be addressed with appropriate legislation.

Additionally, our action team seeks to educate the public about the importance of safe storage for firearms as well as the importance of understanding Florida’s Extreme Risk Protection Order.  This law can be used by every Floridian to contact law enforcement who may then disarm an individual once he/she has been deemed to be at risk of harming themselves or others by a court of law.

We encourage any and all League members to become involved in this incredibly important cause!
