Healthcare

Helping families in Hillsborough and Pasco counties find affordable healthcare services was the topic for our League’s Oct. 3, 2022 online event. Katie Roders Turner, Executive Director of The Family Healthcare Foundation for Hillsborough, Pasco, Pinellas and Polk, explained how this non-profit program works. The statewide Navigator Program is based out of the University of South Florida. The Family Healthcare Foundation is the Tampa Bay Regional Partner for that work, and partners with BayCare Health System, Tampa General Hospital, Premier Healthcare Group, and Evara Health to have Navigators in clinical and community-based settings.

Healthcare Action Group Chair

The HealthCare Action Committee tackles some of the most important topics affecting our lives. We need everyone available to help us stay on top of important healthcare issues that you read about in the news, so we urge you to get involved and make a difference.

The Healthcare Action Group strives to inform and educate, as well as support health issues that directly affect our community, while uniting with organizations that work on health-related issues supported by the HCLWV, LWVFL and LWVUS.  We support the implementation of health equity including access to affordable healthcare and expansion of Medicaid and Mental Health coverage. We stand behind the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act in Florida, as well as the Constitutional right for women to have the right to make reproductive choices and have available services, including abortion.

Our group plans to:

  • Continue efforts to advocate for health care issues.
  • Join efforts with other LWV action groups to focus on health care connections, such as Gun Safety, Natural Resources, Education, and Transportation.
  • Coordinate events to explain current health care issues and concerns to ensure understanding of the issues.  This will include: Medicaid Expansion, Medicare, Mental Health, Reproductive Rights, Planned Parenthood and Health Care for the Underserved.
  • Support Health Care issues that are clear priorities of LWVFL, LWVUS and LWVHC.
  • Expand Healthcare membership.
  • Investigate additional health issues to better educate our community and unite with other organizations to reach different audiences.
